What Is Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive Lens Exchange, sometimes called lens replacement surgery, corrects vision by replacing the natural lens inside your eye with an artificial one that is customized for you.

As you move through your forties and fifties, the natural lens gradually stiffens and loses its ability to focus up close, a condition called presbyopia. It is why reading glasses become so common for many people later in life, even for those who never needed glasses before.

During RLE, the natural lens is carefully removed and replaced with an advanced technology IOL selected specifically for your eyes and visual goals. The procedure can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia in a single step. What Happens During RLE?

RLE is an outpatient procedure that typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes per eye, with the ability to treat both eyes on the same day. Dr. Singh performs femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery, using high resolution imaged-guided precision for key steps of the procedure.

Advanced Technology IOL Options

The IOL you receive is the heart of your visual outcome, and no single lens is right for everyone. Dr. Singh works with a wide range of advanced technology IOLs and will recommend the option best matched to your eyes, your prescription, and your daily life.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal IOLs provide a full range of vision (distance, intermediate, and near) and offer the greatest independence from glasses for most daily activities. They are also associated with mild haloes and rings around lights, particularly at nighttime.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs deliver distance and intermediate vision with excellent visual quality, a strong fit for active lifestyles who are sensitive to nighttime glare and haloes. They require a light pair of reading glasses for small print and prolonged near activities.

Light Adjustable Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens is the first-of-its-kind lens implant that can be fine tuned and adjusted after the initial lens replacement surgery. Once your eye has healed, your vision is customized with a series of painless light treatments until your prescription is exactly where you want it. It is a great option for patients with prior refractive surgery, such as LASIK/PRK/RK, where the initial IOL calculations may not be as accurate.

Toric IOLs

Toric IOLs correct astigmatism directly within the lens, producing sharper, crisper vision for patients whose corneas are not perfectly round. Because it is a single vision lens implant, reading glasses are required for all intermediate and near activities.

Recovery After RLE

Recovery from RLE is typically quick and comfortable. Most patients notice clearer vision within a day or two, with vision continuing to sharpen over the following weeks as the eye fully adapts to the new lens.

You can expect to:

Resume most normal activities, including work and light exercise, within a few days
Use prescription eye drops for a short period to support healing
Avoid eye rubbing, swimming, and strenuous activity for 1 week

Mild scratchiness, light sensitivity, or halos around lights can occur early on and generally fade as healing progresses.

No. Numbing drops and light sedation keep you comfortable, and most patients feel only mild pressure during the brief procedure.

LASIK reshapes the cornea, while RLE replaces the lens inside the eye. LASIK does not address presbyopia or prevent cataracts, while RLE has the potential to correct vision at every distance and last a lifetime.

The procedures are nearly identical. The difference is timing. Cataract surgery removes a lens that has already clouded, while RLE replaces a clear, dysfunctional lens to correct vision, before a cataract ever forms.

A lifetime. The IOL does not degrade, and your eye can never develop a cataract afterward.
